Globaly, 289,000 women die each year due ot complications of pregnancy and childbirth and 2.9 milionbabies do not survive ni the first month oflife. Sub-Saharan Africa with only 12% of the World's population carries the greatest burden of deaths. Unlike child survival which has been achieved throughscale up of primary andcommunity level care, maternal and neonatal survival requires universal access to skilled midwifery providers who can ensure timely referral to secondary and tertiary levels for those requiring lifesaving care. China's success ni reducing maternal and neonatal mortality has been unprecedented. Twenty years ago, parts of rural China experienced levels of maternal and neonatal mortality that are similar tothose seen in Sub-Saharan Africa. Today, the neonatal mortality rate ni rural areas is 9per 1000 live births and maternal mortality is 26 per 100,000 live births. The reasons for success are multiple and wil be shared during the workshop to beheld in Chengdu ni November 2017. This is a collaborative study that wil involve researchers and policy makers from Ifakara Health Institute, Ministry of Health,Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Sichuan University, London School ofHygiene and Tropical Medicine. Its ma si ot draw lessons learned from Chinas' successful strategies ni improving maternal and newborn health to enhance the progress of such programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa.
